Familia Caesaris: Kejserens slaver og frigivne

I år 1 f.Kr. blev der lagt gulv i et gravmæle forbeholdt medlemmerne af en begravelsesforening i Rom. En indskrift afslører, at arbejdet kostede 82 denarer og blev betalt af fire bestyrelsesmedlemmer af deres egen lomme. De fire bestyrelsesmedlemmer var alle slaver, som tilhørte Augustus. De to var gartnere, mens de to andre arbejdede som hushovmestre, atrienses. Normalt havde slaver kun ét navn, men de fire slaver havde to navne, som afslører, at de var blevet foræret til Augustus af deres tidligere ejere som gave eller som arv. Hushovmesteren Alexander Amyntianus havde således oprindeligt tilhørt kong Amyntas af Galatien i ........
