”Hvad gør vinbonden i Moselområdet nu for sælge sin høstede vin”, spurgte en anonym skribent i 1841 og svarede selv: ”det frække svar er: absolut intet!” og fortsætter med at beskrive, at bonden efter at have høstet, presset saften og lagret vinen roligt sætter sig hen og venter til, der tilfældigt dukker en indkøber op. Opkøberne var kapitalstærke vinhandlere, der i gode år købte mængder op og placerede vinen på et lager, hvorfra den blev afsat til eksport. Denne mellemmand tog en stor del af indtægterne og det betød, at vinproducenterne ikke havde råd til at udvikle deres produkt.
