Dantes litterære geografi

Det billede af jorden, som Dante fremskrev i Den Guddommelige Komedie, var en stille revolution. For uden at gøre et stort nummer ud af det, flyttede Dante i en sådan grad rundt på tingene, at han skabte et helt nyt billede af, hvordan jorden så ud i sin helhed. På den måde afmytologiserede han det overleverede verdensbillede, som han så til gengæld formede på ny i kristendommens billede. For at forstå rækkevidden og betydningen af den nye litterære geografi, Dante indførte, må vi imidlertid først forstå, hvorpå man opfattede jorden i sin helhed før Dante.
